I've been working on a system of helmets that could be seen as a way of showing the glory of the wearer (as was the case in Ancient Greece).
Lakidaemon:
By 430BCE, the Lakonian army had dropped the Corinthian helmet, based on the fact that it obscured hearing and sight too much. The majority of the Spartiates were granted a pilos (bronze cap), and those who had honoured themselves in battle or held officer ranks in the army had better helmets, often Chalcidian helmets, similar to Corinthian helmets but with better eye and ear adaptions.
So the list of Spartiate helmets:
Spartiate: Basic pilos.
Honoured: Polished, red plumed pilos.
Heroic: Polished Chalcidian helmet.
Captain: Red plumed polished Chalcidian helmet.
Strategos/King: Red transverse plumed polished Chalcidian helmet.
Athenai had also moved on from the Corinthian helmet that dominated the Persian Wars, in favour of an even more open design, the Attic helmet which would later become famous as the helmet of the Romans. Unlike Spartiates, members of the Athenian army were expected to pay for their own armour, and so the basic unhinged helmet was most common. Some richer Athenians chose the Corinthian helmet, and often heroes are depicted as having a plumed Corinthian helmet.
So, Athenai:
Hoplite: Attic helmet.
Rich Citizen: Corinthian helmet.
Honoured: Winged Attic helmet.
Heroic: Blue Plumed Corinthian helmet.
Captain: Blue plumed Attic helmet.
Strategos: Blue plumed Attic helmet.
Note that in both cases there were bound to be exceptions based on supply and demand, and that these are just a guideline.
