I thought I'd make another separate post about how Reign of Olympia will fit in with my actual life, as I feel it may help others understand why I've chosen to undertake it all by myself.
Firstly, I'm a 21 year old Fine Arts student from New Zealand. I'm about to begin my 2nd year, studying Sculpture and Printmaking, and intend to major in Sculpture for my final two years. Sculpture at my arts school (The Quay School of the Arts in Wanganui, New Zealand) also has 3D computer graphics, and video as an area of study for a major.
I have a keen interest in Virtual Reality, roleplaying, and the Classical Greek period of history.
I want to incorporate Reign of Olympia into my studies, a fine artwork that immerses the viewer/user/player into the Ancient Greek world, allowing them to interact with people from the time, and experience the land of Greece and the culture that inhabited the land at the time.
So this project will blend a few different things:
A Roleplaying game.
A "virtual reality".
An artwork.
I will also build on this work in my Post Graduate year, as I intend to do a Post Graduate Diploma in Animation. I will be completing that approximately four years from now. I believe that in four years I will add as much content as I feel my game needs, and hopefully some combat/magic scripting and a plethora of items to make the game believable.
I do not intend to generate any money or royalties off this project. It will be free to play/use/discover.
I will be the sole developer of this project, as that is necessary for the artwork to be considered mine wholly and fully. If anyone wants to contribute to a free game, I suggest you visit PlaneShift (especially if you want to put code into the PS engine so I can use it), Peragro Tempus, Trinity Reign, or Tempest in the Aether and join one of their teams.
My current goals are:
A server.
Athenai and Lakedaemon map, human models with basic clothing/armour/weapons, a few rural maps, my own GUI (modded off PlaneShift's official GUI), and some mobile NPCs for players to interact with, fight, kill, loot, etc.
The timeframe for this is within the next year (completed by Christmas 2011).
From there, I will aim to mimic PlaneShift features, such as mounts, pets, combat/magic scripts, "factions" (guild replacement), as well as adding extra cities, a geographically correct overall map, and the like. These features will likely pop in randomly as I figure my way along, or as PlaneShift developers show me how they have implemented it.
At some point, I will hopefully move Reign of Olympia from being a PlaneShift mod to a semi-standalone game with it's own builds. This is low on my priority list however.
